End Tax Free Weekend Woes With These Tips!

Tax Free Weekend (3)

Time to shop until you drop!  Tax Free Weekend is upon us, at least in Texas, so prepare yourself and your shopping squad for this day of adventure.  Use all of these or just some these tips to end or lessen your Tax Free Weekend shopping woes.

Tip #1 Mentally Prepare

Get mentally prepared.  This weekend is usually high-pressure, tense, and can be a lot of fun.  Remember, only YOU decide YOUR HAPPINESS!  Let happiness be your choice.

Tip #2 Make a List

Make a list of stores you will visit as well as the items you will be purchasing at each store.  The better prepared you are the faster you can find the item, pay for it,  and move on to the next store.  Visit these stores first and if you have time left visit those non-essential stores.  Stick to the list!  That might be the hardest part, but just stick to it you and you will be happy you did.

Tip #3 Set a Budget

Set a budget and stick to it!  If you over spend this defeats the savings you thought you would of had.  Consider taking cash to avoid overspending or if you prefer using your plastic make a conscious effort to keep track of your spending.  Also,  any one item over $100 WILL BE TAXED!

Tip #4 Pack Snacks

The night before, prepare bottles of water and non-perishable snacks to pack in a cooler the morning of your shopping adventure.  Be sure to put an ice pack in the cooler or just freeze the bottles of water the night before.  I usually fill my RTIC cup and bring it along everywhere I go.

Tip #5 Pack Phone Charger

Pack your portable phone charger or battery pack.  You will be happy your phone is charged when it comes time to use your digital coupons or need to get in touch with your shopping squad.

Tip #6 Prep Coupons

Clip, save, screen shot, and organize ALL of your coupons!  There is nothing worse than thinking you have them when, in reality, you left them on the kitchen table.  Be sure to READ THE FINE PRINT!  This could kill your happy shopping vibe and potentially lead to a disagreement with the cashier.  Read, read, read!

Tip #7 Dress Appropriately

Since you will be trying on clothes, wear clothing that is easy to change into and out of.  Wear comfortable walking shoes as you will be on your feet most of the day.

Tip #8 Get Out There Early

The early bird gets the worm!  The earlier you get out there the better.  You will avoid traffic, shoppers, get a better parking spot, and you could potentially finish shopping sooner than expected.  Who are we kidding, you will most likely shop until the doors close!

Tip #9 Parking

Park anywhere! Actually, park in the safest, first spot available, and save yourself the headaches of searching endlessly for the closest spot only to have it stolen from you!  Gggrrr! You will save time and end headaches if you park first and walk to your destination.  Before leaving the car be sure to HIDE your belongings and LOCK your doors.  If shopping in Austin, TAKE YOUR BAGS!  The last thing you want to do is spend all the money you saved on bags to hold your new threads.

Tip #10 Common Meeting Area

After arriving at your stores of choice, designate an easy to find meeting area just in case someone gets lost.  We all have that wandering friend who is easily distracted by shiny things.

Tip #11 Select Extra Sizes

Going to the dressing room can be a nightmare! Avoid all sizing issues by grabbing the size you and/or your squad members typically wear as well as a size smaller or larger depending on your body specifications.  Also,  try holding the clothing items to your body  and check for sizing options before taking them to the dressing room, this will save you a lot of time.

Tip #12  Stay Positive

Stay positive, be patient, kind, and have a good time!  You catch more flies with honey than vinegar and remember, only YOU decide YOUR HAPPINESS.  Let happiness be your choice.

Texas Summer Fashion

Monday, Monday, so good to me!  I’m feeling what the Mamas and Papas were talking about; well, at least in this line.

So let us talk about Texas summer fashion!  It is mid summer and we know the hundred degree weather is yet to end.  So what are your options for fashion this summer?  Right now, I am loving this new mint colored, easy, breezy, tiered dress.

So here is what the model, 5’8″ and slim, looks like in a size small. Beautiful, right?  But, what does it look like on a normal person?   Here’s what 5’2″ and average looks like in the same size small. 20170710_085500_Richtone(HDR)

20170710_085628_Richtone(HDR)

Still just as beautiful and flattering!  Worried about the dress being too reveling or low cut or even the laced back closure showing too much?  Worry not, this dress truly adjusts to YOUR body and the laced back closure is adjustable to show the right amount of interest!  Style it up with a cute bralette or bandeau underneath.

Is it short?  This knee length dress falls a few inches above the knee on a 5’8″ frame and directly above the knee on a 5’2″ frame.  Enough coverage for when you absolutely must bend over; remember to be a lady and keep it classy!

So how breathable is the dress?  Given that the dress has a quality lining, it is absolutely refreshing.  The tiers allow air flow in all the right places, the laced back delivers air flow to your back when those breezes unexpectedly pop up, and the spaghetti straps give your shoulders needed wind.

How do you style this dress?  Add a couple of beaded bracelets, a boho necklace, trendy leather embossed earrings and flat wrap sandals for comfort.  Going out in this dress? Slide into some wedges, add a clutch, and call it trendy!

Where can you buy this tiered, mint dress?  TEXAS NATIVE THREADS! gcs_BL158_TexasJust click here or visit www.texasnativethreads.wordpress.com to buy the dress and get FREE SHIPPING!

Wear this to run errands, lunch with the girls, or out on a beach weekend!  You will want to wear this dress everywhere!  It is easy, breezy, and trendy!  This dress is definitely made to fit every BODY and everybody!

Summer in Austin & Central Texas: Water Activities

365SummerFun Image

Despite the cooler than normal rainy spring weather we have been having lately, eventually it will become summer!  Don’t wait for the heat to start marking things of your summer checklist and if you don’t have one, here are some things to do in Austin and the Central Texas area!

Splash!

Hit the water with these activities:

  1. Barton Springs always has room and cold water to cool you down on the hottest summer day! It is spring fed and a constant 68 degrees fahrenheit.  Take your I.D. for entrance and if you are an Austin resident (18-62) it is only $3 to enter and non-residents (18-62) are $8.  Kids 1 and under are FREE!  Make sure to eat before or after you go because park employees keep a watchful eye as food and drink are not permitted; who wants ants at their swimming hole?   Hint:  Use the South Gate Entrance off of Robert E. Lee Rd. for faster entrance and shorter lines!  Get there early on hot days because it fills up fast!
  2. Kayaking and paddle boarding on Lake Austin! Ok, there are several of these kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing centers so it is really based on preference and location.  Texas Rowing Center seems to be very popular considering it’s location to the Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail and ease of free parking next to Austin High.  Most centers will offer kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing but CHECK before you go! If crowds are not your thing try another center such as Congress Avenue Kayak or further east or west on the lake.  Most rentals start at $15 and up depending on the water craft and rental time.  This is a fun and relaxing activity if you like the water.    hamilton-pool-8[6]Photo Source
  3. Want to experience a cool and natural watering hole?  Well, take a trip down to Hamilton Pool Reserve.  If you get into this place consider yourself COOL! Hamilton Pool in located just outside of Austin in Dripping Springs, but still inside Travis County (the same county as Austin).  Since this natural wonder has become popular, us Texans want to keep it as is as long as we can, therefore RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED (May 1 – September 30)!  If you show up on a regular operational day without reservations from May 1 through September 30, expect to wait, wait, and wait! Stay posted as the water condition can change which might prohibit swimming, but hiking is still allowed. It is $10, non-refundable, to make a reservation online, plus the $1 online credit card service fee, also non-refundable ,and a $15 entrance fee per car.  No credit cards accepted at the park. Take a picnic and invite some friends as you will want to enjoy every minute you are there and celebrate the lengthy, but worthwhile process of getting in!SNBW_MasterBlaster_dad_son_lg-683x1024Photo Source
  4.   Ok, this next activity is in Central Texas about 1 hour south of Austin in New Braunfels.  Where can you have the hottest, coolest time in Texas, Schlitterhbahn-bahn-bahn, bop, bop, bop, bop!  That was the old jingle from when I was a kid.  Be sure to set aside an entire day for this one.  You will want to make your schedule according to how much time you are willing to spend under the Texas sun and in the water, but personally I usually get there when they open, at 10 am and leave when they close at 8pm. Food, beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic are available for purchase and if you want to avoid food lines, then bring your own picnic!  Yes, it’s absolutely FREE and you are welcomed to bring a cooler of food and drinks.  I have never heard of anyone having any problems with stolen coolers and/or food, so worry not.  However, you should rent a locker to store your personal belongings such as phone, keys, and cash.  To avoid lines I would recommend starting at the east end of the park, while those lines are shortest and the rides tend to be a little more thrilling, then work your way to the west end.  Oh, I forgot to mention, FREE PARKING and FREE TUBE RENTALS!  That’s right, FREE PARKING in Schlitterbahn parking lots and FREE TUBE RENTALS when tubing through the park.  These tubes can also be used on the portion of the Comal River which runs along side Schlitterbahn East.  When done with your day of fun grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants around Schlitterbahn.  You will be glad you made the short trip out to Schlitterbahn!
  5. Lastly,  go to your own local, neighborhood, or backyard pool!  It should be free or just a couple of dollars to get in.  Luckily, my neighborhood has a nice sized pool and we make good use of it.  So invite a friend or two, maybe even your family, have some shaved ice, turn up your blue tooth speaker and jump right it!

Midland

Midland

Source

Hey y’all, been feeling under the weather for a couple of days, but doing better now, so that’s the reason for the long break between posts.  It’s just about summer time and who doesn’t want to drink a cold Shiner while two-stepping with their beloved across some decades old wooden planks?  Count me in!

My mother used to tell me that she marks momentous events in her life according to music; I am the same way and live my life in playlists as many of you might too.  Midland is a throw back to country music of the 1970s and 80s; can’t you smell the Old Spice and Brut in the air?  Although, these scents remind me of my wonderful grandpa and dad, they are no match for the modern-retro, smooth, like-able, and easy listening of Midland.

midland faceshotMark Wystrach’s , third from the left, voice is similar to that of Zac Brown with a subtle Texas twang; drawn out vowels and all.  His voice lures you in as though he says, “com’ on y’all, let’s dance” and his warm looks will hook you.  The lyrics give a long nod to country music artists of the 1970s and 80s with slower melodies, perfect two-stepping rhythm, and relatable lyrics.  Personally, Midland’s vintage sound is a sigh of relief from the catchy, common, pop sound that has inundated mainstream country music and infectiously obstructs true enjoyment of listening to music.

As we move into this Memorial Day weekend add Midland to your river floatin’, beach bummin’, bar-b-quin’, beer drinkin’ playlist.  Oh and remember, always drink responsibly.

Moisturizing for your 30s

Good morning! My birthday was not too long ago and as a purchaser of products at or by Sephora I earn points and a free gift for my birthday month, which is pretty awesome.  This time my free birthday gift was a sample size of Caudalíe Vinoperfect Radiance Serum and Caudalíe Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet.  I know, I know, not totally Texas, but it is sold in Texas stores and I am a Texas girl!

Since turning 30 my skin has changed some by becoming a little drier and a few micro-wrinkles have made their debut, eeeekkkk! Previously, my only line of defense was to consume more water and that would remedy the situation.  Now that must be coupled with some moisturizer, evening and night.

Caudalíe Vinoperfect Radiance Serum and Caudalíe Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet have noticeably changed the elasticity of my face and neck.  I am not an esthetician, but these things work best for my combination and sensitive skin.  First, I wash my face and exfoliate with a facial cleansing brush, then after patting my face dry, I apply Caudalíe Vinoperfect Radiance Serum all over my face and neck area.  One full dropper usually does the job, then I follow it with the Caudalíe Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet, which I gently massage all over.  I do this every morning and night as well as drink lots of water!

Caudalíe Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet Video

Moisturizers are great and personally, I think water should always be consumed regularly throughout the day.  Remember, beauty comes from the inside out!  Well, that is my opinion.  Usually I shy away from unfamiliar moisturizers, but I thought I would give this one a chance and it was free!  I would definitely continue using Caudalíe Vinoperfect Radiance Serum and Caudalíe Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet.  And like Truvy from Steel Magnolias said…

Have an awesome Day!

Marfa Brand Soap – Marfa, Texas

Yesterday was Mother’s Day and if you still have to get a gift for your mom, mother of your kids or anyone, really anyone would love this soap, then look no further! 20170315_132731

For spring break I went out west to Marfa, Texas.  This was a side trip of the main trip to Big Bend, which one must do and I will write about later.  Marfa is a quaint West Texas town approximately 7.5 hours from Central Texas, full of modern art galleries,  West Texas flare, and small businesses.  Surprisingly,  this town is an oasis of hip, cool, and modern, miles into the Chihuahuan Desert.  20170314_134308

Traveling in a desert area requires one to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.  Your regular soap might not to do the job out in the desert, so get some Marfa Brand Soap! When lured into Marfa Brand Soap by the enchanting fragrance, it was an easy sell.  They offer several different soap scents such as Rosemary Peppermint, Yucca Root with Sage and Eucalyptus, and my favorite Rose Clay with Lavender.  These incredibly fragrant soaps lather well, moisturize the skin deeply enough that an after shower lotion application can be skipped, they don’t goo up when sitting in the shower nor does it break into tiny pieces! The best part is that this soap is so fabulously fragrant that it can serve as room fragrance too.  Dual purpose and awesome, Marfa Brand Soap is uniquely Texas, simply you.

Mom, mum, ma, mama, mommy, mother…

Happy Mother’s Day!

Well it’s that one day of the year when mothers across the country are told and shown how much they are loved by family and friends.  Although I may not be a mother now, many of my friends and relatives are mothers, have mothers, or have one in some capacity in their lives. So here are a few photo funnies to give homage to those courageous women we call mothers, may we be forever grateful for the unconditional love they give us.

Let’s be honest, who didn’t do this at least once to their mother?

Screen Shot 2017-05-11 at 8.54.47 PM

Heard a friend say something similar about their daughter’s lunchable.  Eat what you can, when you can.

This might be true for some mothers of fur babies.

Just heard my co-worker talk about this the other day.

I’ve witnessed this one happen.

My neighbor is so good, she gets me too.

Screen Shot 2017-05-11 at 9.06.45 PM

Hopefully all mothers feel this way all the time.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Wildflower Wednesday

Haven’t you noticed those gorgeous wildflowers this year?  Different than the fields of bluebonnets last year, but hearty enough to stay around for a couple of months. So what are they called? Indian Blankets, not the kind you wrap around you, but the ones that will brighten any room.20170506_195445

These beautiful Indian Blankets cover the vacant fields I pass during my evening walk/run and when the setting sun shines on them just right, they make the ground appear as though it glows a fiery red-orange.  Although, these are the most plentiful of all the wildflowers in my area many others naturally pair well with them, such as the Greenthread, a yellow petal with a black center and what appears to be Frostweed, similar in appearance to Baby’s Breath.  20170506_195430

So why not bring these raving natural beauties home? Sure they might not look so attractive next to those random weeds, but hey, mother nature knows a thing or two about flowers, right?  20170509_184953So, pick a handful or two and combine them with other wildflowers, wrap a ribbon or some twine around an old vase to make your own Texas Wildflower bouquet.  Go ahead, give your self some FREE flowers! Isn’t that exactly how nature intended it? 20170509_185358

Interested in other types of flowers you come across in your area, but don’t know what their names, well take a look at this link, Texas Wildflower Identification, and be inspired to take a lazy Sunday drive in search of beautiful landscapes such as these in Wildflower Galleries.   Take advantage of what nature has to offer.

Mary Kay Monday

Mary Kay Monday

Good morning! Hope y’all had an awesome weekend and got outside to enjoy the beautiful weather.  Well, I know you are thinking, Mary Kay is not uniquely Texas, but one of my best girlfriends, Tamara, is!  So this Saturday she came down to do a Mary Kay party in Kyle with some friends of mine.  First off, Tamara loves to talk and is a people person so this job is perfect for her secondly, she has always had a fondness for all kinds of make-up and finally, she is a wonderful genuine person who will tell you the honest truth about a make-up product and it’s quality.

20170506_143957
Mary Kay Consultant Tamara

I am and have been a MAC foundation user for the past 7 years and use other various products from big chain stores such as Ulta and Sephora.  These stores can be both mesmerizing for those make-up enthusiasts out there and overwhelming for beginners or non-make-up wearers. So when Tamara told me she had become a Mary Kay consultant I was skeptical of their product and quality in comparison to that of Ulta and Sephora.  After all, these were big chain stores which contained some of the newest technologies in make-up and related products.

She had me sample a few things, but amongst those samples my favorites were:

The Mary Kay CC Cream Sunscreen is wonderfully light but give more than ample coverage and matches my complexion perfectly.  I am naturally very tan and bronze, so it can be difficult finding a make-up that matches my skin tone, contains sunscreen, and is hypo-allergenic.  This has all of those and it leaves you looking fresh and not oily as some products might in this humid Central Texas weather.20170506_143644

Like I mentioned earlier, I am very bronze so lighter blushes do not show up well and require lots of layers which can appear overdone in natural light.  Mary Kay® Mineral Cheek Color Duo is light and bright.  A little goes a long way and stays well all day on top of the Mary Kay CC Cream Sunscreen.  In addition to the Mary Kay CC Cream Sunscreen and Mary Kay® Mineral Cheek Color I ordered the Mary Kay Cream Eye Color Apricot Twist.  My eyelids have become extremely oily as I become more wonderfully mature and typically use primer to ensure that my eyeshadow doesn’t crease.  Mary Kay Cream Eye Color Apricot Twist surprisingly stayed flawless all day and did not crease even in this warm Texas weather.

Overall, I am excited to get these products in a couple of weeks, just in time for summer and show you what I have been talking about.  If you are looking for a great Mary Kay consultant in Central Texas, in the greater Austin area, consider Tamara, she will love to help you look and feel your best.  This may not be uniquely Texas, but Mary Kay can be simply you.

Nom, nom, nom!

Everyone must eat, right?  But it is what we choose to eat and where we eat that determines the level of gratification.  Typically, my recommendations would be to eat healthy foods, but sometimes you just have to let loose and enjoy a thing or two.

  1. Barton Springs always has room and cold water to cool you down on the hottest summer day and just down the road from the cold water you will find plenty to eat at The Picnic. You can get Thai, Italian, Mexican food and other tasty meals!  The trailers have been updated so check the website in order to prepare your tummy for some yummy delights.  This is also a dog friendly place, so bring along man’s best friend.  It appears as though the delicious Monte Cristo above is no longer available, but I could be wrong.  Let me know if this vendor is still out there.  The OasisPhoto Source
  2. Oh the view! The Oasis has the best view of the Lake Travis and offers endless food and libation options.  This is a must do just for the view.  It is recommended that you arrive before sunset and eat outdoors to get the full experience.   20170527_17125320170527_1707263. Well, you have probably had plenty to eat after going to The Picnic or The Oasis, so what’s left?  Dessert!  It may not be your typical dessert, but this is a cool you down, summer time kind of thing…Snow Cones!  Sweet Caroline’s  has the most flavorful and delicately shaven ice.  The ice is velvety and the flavor combinations are incredible!  Last summer I was determined to find the best shaved ice stand and this is it, look no further.  They have three locations, take your pick, and you will be delighted!

Ok, I am back from vacation and hopefully, you have checked off #1-5 of the Summer in Austin & Central Texas: Water Activities and if you have yet to do so, take a look and do them! You will be happy you did.  Now, on to the next step of the checklist, activities!

Alright, alright, alright!

Source

Roam the city with these activities:

Source

  1. Sound & Cinema offers the best view of downtown on the north lawn of the Long Center.  Sound & Cinema is an opportunity to listen to FREE music and see FREE movies! Could it get any better? Well, of course it could! Food trucks, cocktails and beer for purchase.  Plus you can bring your little ones and/or your leashed pups! Check it out and you will be glad you did.  Source
  2.  Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail is one of the most popular and beautiful things to do in Austin and ease of free parking next to Austin High is an added advantage.  Besides walking, running, biking and walking your dog Lady Bird Lake offers kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing so make a day of it! The west side of the trail tends to be a little busier, so if crowds are not your thing try going further east on the lake.  If you get hungry try any one of the restaurants close to Congress or on Barton Springs.  Source
  3. Trivia at Radio Coffee & Beer is something that my boyfriend and I love to do.  Besides it’s a great excuse to get some great food from the food trucks they have on site and they have the best iced coffee & tea.  Also, parking can be limited, so get there early.  Come out and exercise your brain! IMG_4900-740x493Source
  4. Mural Tour 2017 edition is on my own to do list.   Everyone has seen the “I love you so much” off of Congress and several other staple murals, but has anyone seen Mr. Rogers on the side of Home Slice?  These murals are always changing and new ones are being added.  This one is 100% free aside from the gas and time you are willing to invest. Source
  5. Chicken Shit Bingo how much more Texan can you get!  This too is on my list and can’t wait to experience it.  This takes place on Sunday evenings at Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon.  Let me know what you think! Can’t wait to hear what you thoughts are about all of these activities.  Stay posted for part 3, Food!
